2004 S60 Blower Quit Today

Post by csh »

I went to drive my S60 today and discovered that the blower wasn't working. I guess this should not surprise me since it has been making a chirping sound for years, mainly in cold weather. Before I got around to pulling the motor I tried tapping the blower housing with a screwdriver handle in the hopes that it was a stuck brush with no luck. I went through the trouble to remove the blower and then plugged it back in to the harness to test it again and it worked fine. Maybe a stuck brush or a dead spot? Given the age and the fact that it has been making noise I am committed to replacing the blower since I have everything apart. I am not inclined to replace the resistor at this point since it seems to be working fine and it saves me a little money. Should I reconsider replacing the resistor and is there anything else I should check on while I have it apart?

Search for the DIY I posted a few yrs ago.
Basically add a few drops of oil on the shaft/bushing interface.

This has worked well for me.

PS: no bearing, just bushing in the blower motor.

I would just replace the blower yes, it's 15 years old, not the resistor. Oil the shaft if you don't mind going back in later this winter on the chance it fails then.

Good time to swap the cabin filer? Lysol the AC box?

A properly oiled blower motor lasts some 180K-200K miles.

The brushes last a long time.

The dry bushing gives the squeaky nouse, sometimes binding.

I oil my Volvo, BMW blower shaft when noisy. My blower motors usually go past 200K...

You can catch a P2 blower early by listening to the pitch when you brake lightly, if it changes, it’s getting dry. I pulled mine and lubed it and it’s still going strong

Thanks for the suggestions. Given that the motor just stopped and that I cannot determine the exact reason why, I am just going to replace it. I'd feel different if the it seemed like the rotor was seized or if I could inspect the brushes. At least now I have experience pulling the blower so that if it starts giving warning signs I can pull it and lube as necessary. The cabin filter is new and that is great suggestion about the Lysol since there is easy access to the recirc inlet.

My 2 cents...

- if you have ~ 200K miles, replace it. I forgot who made it, probably Behr. Do your research before buying it. Some ppl break the tab for the 5th screw. Some saved it.

- If you have ~ 100K miles, oil it.

The Blower Motor for P2:
- Behr is $160
- Genuine Volvo is $375

My thinking: oil it and see what happens. Don't waste your hard-earned money.

I already ordered the Behr unit from FCP and it should be here tomorrow. I decided to replace it since I was unsure of the reliability of the one I have and considered it to be a safety issue. It could be hazardous to my health if I let DW drive the car and the blower quits on her, "I thought you fixed that!" Honestly, odds are that it may be just fine with some lube, but it did not seem to be hung or seized when I removed it and I can't inspect the brushes so I am replacing it as insurance that it does not quit at an inopportune time.
