2010 S80 Starter issue (I think)

Post by asap11 »

Hi there,
So, my S80 has 157K miles on it and is lagging when I start it. I have to hold the start button down until it starts. It only takes a second but previously I'd just push the button quickly and it would start right up.

At first I thought it was the battery but there is no clicking and after a day or two of this the battery hasn't died or anything.

I'm almost certain the following is a coincidence, but I did take the car in to replace the rear rotors. When I dropped it off it wasn't happening and when I picked it up I noticed the delayed or lag in starting. I can't see how they could be related, but I thought I'd mention it.

Do you all think its the starter? I'll buy and replace it today if so.
Thank you!

For my 2010 S80 I am still on the origional starter

For my 2008 LR2 (Same engine as the S80) I did replace the starter.

What's not clear from your explanation

Option 1 - you dock the key, press the brake, press the start button, nothing happens for 1 second then the starter engages

Option 2 - you dock the key, press the brake, press the start button, starter engages immediately but the engine required 2 seconds to start running

A new starter will only help with option 2

For my LR2 the new starter is noticeably faster, the higher speed results in the engine starting sooner.

I bought a Bosch starter and I am very happy with it.

Good luck

Paul

The engine would turn over very quickly in the past. Now the engine doesn't turn over so fast. I just recorded a video to show what I mean.

I think it is the starter. The question is how long until it stops starting. Do I have tome to get a new one before losing the use of the car.

Thanks!

It does seem to respond to the docking of the key and the press of the star button.

It looks like you have option 2

A new starter is noticeably faster.

I can't predict how long you have.

When it stops working you are stuck at that location.

The good news is that it isn't hard to change at all.

If you can change you oil then you can change the starter

Good Luck

Paul

PS I was surprised by how much faster a new starter operates

Thank you very much for the quick reply. This just started happening about 2 days ago.

Do they normally get worse over time or suddenly die? Do you think I can get back and fourth to work and fix it this weekend or would you rush to get it done asap? I know there is no way to really know but what is normal?

Thank you again!

If you have someone that can pick you up then the risk is low.

I would risk it but its up to you.

My starter did fail suddenly
