2005 V70 key fob shell replacement

Post by corbijn »

Does anyone know of a decent key fob shell replacement for a 2005 Volvo V70 ('switchblade' fob)?

Just bought a great used 2005 V70 and the hole for the slip ring holder on the fob is cracked so that you can't put a slip ring on it for other keys. The fob and key work fine, but I wanted to be able to put a ring on it with rest of keys.

Anyone know of a decent shell that would allow moving the the existing key and circuit board over? Is this even possible without cutting and programming a new key? I'm thinking the board might be hard to access and/or glued in?

End of the day, I can live with the one I have for sure. Thought I'd check the knowledge and wisdom here.

You can get new shells on eBay. The rounded end of the shell is the key. The lower end with the Printed circuit board is the remote. Inside the key case is the ID transponder. It looks like a little pill. Make sure you transfer it to the new shell.

Take care not to crack ID transponder. Pry the plastic and lift the ID transponder. Do not pry the ID transponder. Same putting the ID transponder in the new case. The safe way is to detach the whole key end from the remote end (one screw) then transfer the old key case along with the key blade and ID transponder to the new remote case.

You can find a local locksmith to cut key blades.

You can get brand new remotes and keys with transponders on eBay. Then hire Yagger to program them. Do not separate the card with numbers on it from the remote. Yagger will need them numbers to program the remote. The new aftermarket remotes are better for putting on a key ring. Look at the bottom. You can also get just the shell in that style.

You can also get colorful Silicone covers for the shell. Make finding the keys easier.

I also bought a car with only one key that someone had been chewing on. Be careful with your transponder chip, its glass.

I have this exact problem. The D-ring won't stay in the hole as it's been pried apart. The previous owner's mechanic glued the key blade in the open position. One key is in the drawer as an emergency back-up, the other we use carefully, but you constantly hit the lock and unlock buttons while starting the car.

I had no idea this was so easy - I keep hearing about $400 keys.

Here he swaps the old key blade into the new case so there's not even any key cutting required...

I had to laugh because Mr Youtube Fumblefingers pries on and drops the fragile bits over and over. Slow down, man!

Here he moves the critical transponder pill and everything across, but keeps the new blade, which then requires cutting to match the old. I've never seen one of these internal key cutters - it's like a little metal lathe, interesting.

No programming required, correct?

My local locksmith has a better key cutter. It scans the key cut and uploads the data. The service searches a database and figures out the perimeters of the original cut. Downloads the original cut data to the cutting machine then cuts the blank. That way the wear and tear is not transferred to the new blade. He charges $30.00 per key because it cost him X amount to use the service.

No programming required for just a case change.

For new keys with new transponders and new remotes you need Yagger's services. A local locksmith to cut the blank if adding a second or third key.

Rick,

I ordered the replacement case and will transfer my key, transponder and board over, I think. The videos above are going to be helpful. Thanks to all for your advisement and input. Will let folks know how it goes. I'm thinking now that I may order one of the S60 ones with the place for the jump ring on the bottom, like the XC60 video above. It seems like the fitment works for my 2005 V70 for that style.
