Serious Timing Issue
Ok, to make this as easy as possible, I just need the correct answer to this hypothetical situation. If you have a 06 s60R, with no timing belt on it, the crankshaft marking is in its correct position to the blocks marking, but the cams are not lined up and am not sure if they have been rotated or if the sprockets have been removed from the hubs or anything like that, how would i go about re-timing and installing the timing belt?

You would turn both cams past the cam marks clockwise 1/2 turn, then turn them back to the marks, hold them on the marks , and install the timing belt.
If your cam pulleys are sprung, hold them on marks with zip ties. If they aren’t sprung, the will stay in place.
**** Discliamer. Going to into a timing belt job trying to follow a recipe, as opposed to researching and understanding the function of each piece, is the lead cause of job failure and bent valves.
I’ve done lots of these on various makes, a, a decent intermediate level mechanic, and last one I ended up hitting pistons with valves

set it up and rotate it twice by hand to check its not hitting valves.wbrenegade420 wrote: ↑28 Sep 2020, 00:35 Ok, to make this as easy as possible, I just need the correct answer to this hypothetical situation. With a complete unknown situation its safer to go over everything, the crank pulley might not be torqued,
same for the cam hub center bolt , in which case you need to lock the cams with the tool on the back end of the cams.

ok, I re-read and comprehended this time.ut the cams are not lined up and am not sure if they have been rotated or if the sprockets have been removed from the hubs or anything like that,
If you aren't positive on the VVT hub position or removal, you need the cam lock tool to reset these.
If they get loose, its a new cylinder head and/or engine needed.
props to jonesg in the Pine Tree State for catching this

Thank you to all who replied. Looks like all be using the cam tool to reset everything. Any good links to the best writeups for such a job?

you'll also need T60 ? bit for the big cam bolt.
