Hello,
Firstly, I am so happy and relieved I found MVS and all of its good members!
I've read the suggestions that have been posted related to moving the gear selector out of park and I've read the manual as well. I was able to fiddle with the selector and it finally popped into Park however it only lasted for a day.
Overall, this is what I've tried:
1. I removed the gear selector cover pushed it aside in order to spray the mechanism with WD40.
2. I moved the yellow catch lever to the left trying to release the gear manually. The yellow catch lever is very loose and wobbly. Is it supposed to be loose and wobbly?
3. I've checked fuses 7 and 12. Should I replace the fuses even though they look fine?
4. Local car mechanic was unable to release the gear.
I would greatly appreciate any other suggestions and guidance.
Many thanks!

I thought someone with real knowledge of this problem would answer, but they have not. I suspect the problem may be in the brake interlock linkage. This linkage would require you to press the brake before shifting. It could be broken plastic parts or worn metal parts. Sorry this is not much help.

Also, search MVS for 'shifter stuck in park'. I suspect the 240, 740, and 940 series all had similar mechanism and problems. You may find helpful older posts.

Thank you, Volvolugnut, for your thoughtful reply.
I will look into your suggestion of the break interlock linkage. Before I had this problem, I always pressed the break and held to gear selector from Park into reverse or drive. I'll look for any worn or broken metal or plastic parts.
I did find older posts related to this issue and took action. However, those suggestions did not work.
Hopefully your break interlock linkage and or worn out parts solves the problem.
I'll keep you posted!
Many thanks,
Sharon

These 240 Volvos are very durable, but will have quirky failures as parts wear. Check the bushings in the shifter linkage from the bottom side. They can get sloppy and may cause this problem.

Hi Volvolugnut, Apologies for the delay to respond but I just had the 240 repaired! Thank you soo much for your suggestion to check the bushings. It was the bushings that prevented the gear selector from moving out of park. Yahoo! You are a fantastic virtual Volvo diagnostician! Thank you again for solving this mystery! Further, the water pump was leaking antifreeze so I replaced that as well. Now if I can only reattach the armrest! Not drivability critical but I will try once again to reattach! Luck on my side, I now own a 2011 Volvo XC70...clean a whistle and an upgrade from my beloved 240! The base of the side view mirror (driver side) on the XC70 has peeled away from the door a bit and the mirror shakes when I closed the door and when driving in a crosswind the wind can be heard. This is the only thing I have to mend. I thought of trying to take the inside door panel off in order to be able to approach the side view mirror. If you have any suggestions that could be helpful I would appreciate your insights. Many thanks!

Post your 2011 XC70 questions in their own forum. If you post a photo of the 240 armrest, we may be able to help on that.
Glad to be able to help - I have about 30 years of 240 driving experience.

Does the 240 not have a shift override button? Or am I remembering an overdrive button on the shifter?
The 850 has an override button on the console next to the shifter.
