98 v70 t5 m56 motor swap

Post by JLv70t5 »

Hey everyone I had a very unfortunate event. Oil cooler return line blew off and long story short my crank is seized :( I was curious what other motors I would be able to direct swap in or what modifications I would have to make . I know they swapped from manual to electronic throttle after 98 but would i be able to keep my intake and put it on a 99+? What else would i have to look out for? Any insight would be greatly appreciated I really don't want to scrap it

02+ motors got new, longer con rods and are supposedly more tolerant of detonation. All else being equal, try to get one of those.

You can move your 1998 accessories over to pretty much any long block in the P80 series or the P2 series

If you can get a 99 on turbo model they have a biscuit oil cooler without the oil lines to the radiator. I actually have a decent block here in eastern NY if you can travel ( meet halfway?)

Thanks for the info i'm only in southern Maine so that's not too far. But this is definitely going to be a "down the road" project. Just trying to get an idea about what i should do. Will an alternator and power steering pump from a 98 fit onto a 99+? I know the changed the mounting brackets a little. Again thanks all. I'm relatively new to volvos

We swapped an '01 LPT motor in place of the motor in our '97 GLT (LPT).

I swapped all of the accessories from the old to the new motor with 2 small issues (need to notch the timing belt cover slightly, and would need to drill and tap a boss for one of the accessory bracket bolt holes (or just leave it out. There are still 4 of the 5 bolts there, and we've had no issues in 15K miles). Didn't even crack open the AC system.
Intake, etc swapped over, no problem. The distributor swapped over, but you do have to open up the end of the cam to allow the rotor mount to fit. The threads for the bolt are there, but the recess for the nub on the rotor mount is not. (We'll be converting the engine BACK to COP soon, but at the time that wasn't in the plan). A 7/16" (11mm) drill bit did the job.
Used the '01 (RN) oil pan with attached cooler, to get rid of the lines going to the oil cooler in the radiator. Also updated to the later pick-up for the oil pump.
The front motor mount bracket needed to be swapped to the 99-00 version, and the passenger side frame mount also needed to be changed.

Your '98 HPT motor would be the same as any of those in the 850's, but they also usually come with higher mileage, so trying to source a 99+ motor might be the best bet to get something a little more fresh.

You have to bring over the 1998 brackets as the mounting for the PS,alternator, and AC compressor are completely different.

Make sure you get the rotor plate in right, a good friend of mine chased this for a month recently.

You can use any turbocharged RN engine.

The '98 Intake manifold will not transfer to a RNC engine. RN and RNC Intakes have different bolt patterns
The compression ratio is too high on Naturally Aspirated engines for the turbocharger.

It is easy to tell a RN from a RNC. The RN has one Auxiliary belt that drives both the Alternator and Air Conditioning Compressor. The RNC has two Auxiliary belts, one drives the Alternator, the other drives the Air Conditioning Compressor.
