seat belt post stuck

Post by danas200 »

I own a 95 850 who's drivers side seatbelt has become stuck. It's played most of the belt out and now won't retrack back up inside the roller. I've pulled the cover back to exam the insides but couldn't understand how to retrack it back in. I see a cable that's part of the airbag setup i beleive running up into the top of the belt-roll area. How does one repare this problem any ideas?

Usually when a belt sticks it can be retracted by pulling on it very gently then letting go to see if it goes back. It can take several attempts to do this.

Be extremely careful if you investigate the working parts as the belts can have mechanical or pyrotechnical tensioners fitted which require specialised knowledge.

Thanks for your input, I called the dealer who told me these things get stuck and can't be repared but replaced to the tune of $300.00 installed! ugh. I was worried I could get hurt messing around with it as the side inpack air bags seem to have something to do with the cable running down from this area [roller]. I'm willing to remove it from it's mount if it's safe to do it. This way I might beable to mess with the gearing and the belt, in so fixing it?

I'm betting you can fix it with enough yanking and beating. Do yourself a favor first.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CABLES.

Sorry for shouting but it is important.

At that point, after about 1 minute or so for everything to bleed down, you can do whatever you want to it and the SRS is oblivious to what is happening and will not trigger. It will also prevent an SRS alarm which can only be reset at the dealership for a fee.

If you can't get it loose I would be tempted to take one off of another 850 in a junk yard.
