Volvo Repair Database Clearing the "maintenance needed" message?

Post by Mr. Detail »

Morning guys;
OK, I was able to clear my SRS warning finally but now have the "Maintenance needed" warning message. This is on a 2002 V70.
I pulled up at least three (3) youtube videos yesterday and tried all three with no luck. One said hold down the trip odometer button while moving from ignition key position #1 to position #2. That did not work. I then tried having the trip odometer on both the T1 and T2. That didn't work. I also realize that there must be some mileage showing on either trip meter before trying. Does anyone know of a sure fire way to clear that message?

This works for my 2001 V70, to clear the Service Required light (not the message):

2001 Volvo S80 / V70 / S60 Models (May apply to S40/V40 also)
• The service reminder indicator lamp illuminates for 120 seconds when the ignition is first switched on.
• Insert key and turn Ignition Switch to position I
• Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
• Turn the Ignition switch to position II (within 5 seconds)
• The service reminder indicator starts flashing when the reset button for the trip odometer has been pressed for 10 seconds
• Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 5 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded.
• If the trip meter reset button is not released within 5 seconds the indicator is not reset, but the indicator will stop flashing.

Try the ones for 2000, 2001 & 2002. You may have a late or early build.

1999-2000 Volvo S70 / V70 / C70 Models
  • Insert key in to ignition but don't turn it yet, POS 0.
    1. Press and Hold the odometer trip counter reset button
    2. Turn ignition switch to "run" position (Position II)
    3. After Service light flashes, release odometer reset button
    4. Turn ignition off
    5. Turn ignition back on to confirm reset

2001 Volvo S80 / V70 / S60 Models (May apply to S40/V40 also)
  • 1. The service reminder indicator lamp illuminates for 120 seconds when the ignition is first switched on.
    2. Insert key and turn Ignition Switch to position I
    3. Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
    4. Turn the Ignition switch to position II (within 5 seconds)
    5. The service reminder indicator starts flashing when the reset button for the trip odometer has been pressed for 10 seconds
    6. Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 5 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when successful.
    7. If the trip meter reset button is not released within 5 seconds the indicator is not reset, but the indicator will stop flashing.

2002-2007 All Volvo Models
  • 1. The service reminder indicator lamp illuminates for 120 seconds when the ignition is first switched on
    2. Insert key and turn Ignition Switch to position I
    3. Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
    4. Turn the Ignition switch to position II (within 2 seconds)
    5. Hold the reset button for the trip meter pressed in until the original trip counter value blinks and is redisplayed
    6. (For all vehicles 2003- a general yellow lamp will light when the reset button must be released.)
    7. Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 4 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when successful.
    8. If the trip meter is already reset the reset button should be held in for a minimum of 10 seconds and a maximum of 14 seconds.
    9. If the reset button for the trip odometer is not released within 4 seconds, the service reminder indicator (SRI) is not reset.

2008-2009 Volvos with starter push button on dashboard
  • 1. The trip odometer must have at least 0.1 mile on it or the light will not reset.
    2. Get in vehicle and do not push down on the brake pedal
    3. Put the key in the slot and push the starter button once
    4. Press and hold down the odometer reset button
    5. While doing this, push the starter button again and hold for 2 seconds
    6. Keep the odometer reset button held in and watch the instrument cluster for the general warning indicator (I) to illuminate. When this happens, release the button.
    7. Turn the vehicle off then back on and verify the message is now out
