Brake rotor question

Hello all;
I need to replace my front brake rotors soon and I wondered if it is alright to replace the old standard smooth ones with a slotted/drilled rotor?
I have a 2002 V70 base model.

Sure why not. Drilled rotors cools better but is prone to crack if you drive you car like a race car. Race cars usually just have slotted rotors for that reason.

This oldhead likes to think his base model V70 is a race car but sadly my pockets are very thin. I will assume that the drilled/slotted ones won't crack with my style of driving.

On a side note, how do I correctly determine which diameter my rotors are? 286mm or 305mm?

I now have two different answers from two different sources.

I think the 305mm were only used on R models and had a different caliper and caliper bracket.

Try putting your VIN into volvo webstore and pulling up part numbers this way.

Measure your rotors, the difference is large enough great precision is not required in the measuring.
