The factory stereo on my 2006 V70 does not like home-burned CDs. The lights no longer come on at night. The car takes us on a lot of road trips. It needs something better.
The plan is something that can connect to SiriusXM and will read files from a USB or a SD card and might also have ApplePlay so I can see the driving directions.
If I do get something double-DIN with a screen, I am considering getting some sort of backup camera while I am at it.
Now here is the question. I know that there are units out there that can use the steering wheel controls, and I assume that that stuff comes through CANbus. Does that mean that the unit ought to also know when the TCU shows the car in reverse and will switch to the backup camera? Is there a method to wire the power to the backup camera to the reverse light wiring and have it show? Either way, or some other, it would be nice if the backup camera "just worked".
Does anyone have suggestions?

Any brand name 2DIN + SWC adapter. Take the camera power from the reverse lights.
I have a Kenwood DDX + DIY adapter (https://github.com/vtl/volvo-kenwood or lately https://github.com/vtl/volvo-ddd). You can solder a similar adapter or buy a ready to use.

So basically if the backup camera sends a signal, it takes over the screen on these things. That sounds like a good design approach.
The Arduino CANbus display looks pretty nice. Right now there is a pocket that is about perfect for my phone. I was thinking about grafting that onto the new face plate if I could. However, I could see having my kids build one of those as a project and installing it sometime later.
I will pick some hardware, install it and post a recap for anyone else who might have similar questions.

Arduino constantly reads a low-speed CAN-bus, sees a message that the gear lever is in R and tells stereo to switch to backup camera. P2 is all about CAN-bus (and a bit about LIN-bus).CedBobKing wrote: ↑15 Dec 2020, 05:59 So basically if the backup camera sends a signal, it takes over the screen on these things.
