When it rains it pours. Daughter just bought her first Volvo, a 2012 S60 T5 with 91,000 miles. Car looks to be pristine and drove great. Extensive service records with Carfax. We buy from a reputable dealer 'as is', and yes I know exactly what that means. She makes it 95, 95 literal miles and the car, upon starting to come home from work sound horrendous. This engine went from smooth and quiet as a mouse to loud and knocking with a turn of the key. I had the car towed. It sounds like a rod bearing, but shouldn't this have been preceded by a softer knocking before all hell breaks loose? I have broken connecting rods before so unfortunately I am familiar with a rod into the block sound. This was not the sound. This was Christmas night and 16 degrees so I couldn't see anything. I am at work all day today, FD. I will pull the belts tomorrow and spin what I can and start with nothing connected. I pray when the belts are disconnected she'll be quiet. Sorry for the length here.....
If not a rod bearing, any suggestions on anything to check before I dive elbow deep? Also, has anyone changed the bearings without pulling the engine? Is this possible? I haven't seen the underside from the ground up on this car, that's why I'm asking.
HELP and thanks!
Rod bearing replacement
