Exhaust Swappity Do-Dah

Post by Starbuck »

Hello Kids!

On my phone I found someone who asked a similar question but naturally I can't find the thread when switching to my laptop.

There's a gentleman on NextDoor selling a stock exhaust from an '05 v70R ... and I'm wondering if that will fit my '05 XC70. Why? I miss my E36 racecar-liberated exhaust because occasionally I'm still a little douchey. Shhh. I may not be able to hear but I can taste the rumble, damnit. Also, the price it right if the fiancee aka 'Car Part Necessity Committee ' gets wind of it. My argument is already formulating into, "I just saved you and the fam more than the cost of the pipe when I change(d) your oil next week/month/when I get to it because no one drives anymore." Dearest.

I suppose I should ask if ol' Ben will sound different too. I imagine so otherwise why have a different system for the R? I'm trying not to think about back-pressure and terb spooling now. TUNE!

On the 6th day the Creator said...

Any car parts bought by those in my Image prior to marriage shall be bought with impunity and baubles of thrice their value will be given by said fiancé in offering, speed mufflers ten-fold

You are in the clear, but I think the R motor takes a fatter down pipe than the LP XC70?

I think it might be a fat puppy 3 inch for the rear of the R, and smaller for the XC70

You can check volvo parts online for part numbers...if your eye should fall upon a bargain, please pick it up.

Someone was hunting for a Volvo mechanic in Alabamistan recently, suggested they ping you.

I am also interested in commiting this sin, i miss that exhaust sound i had on my T5. Be carful because the wagons suffer from "droning" its like some evil demon while cruising at highway speeds. I had it on my 740turbo because the "muffler guy" talked me into it (i think he worked for the devil)

I will check the part numbers. Woot. If not I'm already thinking about finding a welder. Heh. Frankenxhaust.

Oh thanks for calling Alabamastan it's proper name. I haven't heard from anyone but if I do, I know who to blame. Heh.

Droning...hmm. I don't think I'd hear that since it's likely in the lower end of the spectrum, eh? Mechanics are devil-spawn! ;P

Thank you for the heads up. I'll keep you updated. If I have time tomorrow, I'll shimmy under Ben in the driveway and check out his underbits to eyeball with the R pipe pics. That's not very scientific but I'm pretty good at eyeballing. It'll be a fact finding mission for bracket location and hanger life check. Maybe I can get a nap in too. Anyone else like napping under their cars?

Heh heh. At the height of my estrogen laden voyage when I had six daughters at home I was often found sleeping under a car , my tools safely in hand, free from talk of things-that-men-never-need-to-hear and yet still have full lives

Thou shalt not covet thine neighbor(‘s V70R/S60R catback).

Yes, it is plug and play; both catback and downpipe. IPD likes to make you think that the S60R/V70R takes a special DP, but this is not true.

As far as wagon-drone goes, it’s all in perspective. I have exhausts on 3 of our P2’s and I enjoy the sound/sensation very much. One of them is our dog hauler (297k XC70), one is the Sunday grandpa with a hat on car (146k V70 AWD), and then the V70R. My V70R is by far the loudest with a catted 3” turbo-back (Mototec DP & IPD 3” oval catback) but it is still a very enjoyable experience (to me). The XC70 & V70 AWD both have aftermarket 3” catted DP’s and retired V70R stock cat backs (with the resonator replaced with straight pipe).

With an aftermarket DP (I’d go catted) and a stock V70R catback you’ll have wonderful sounds emanating from your tailpipe. Hangers are all the same too. Don’t even begin to worry about backpressure - the turbo provides plenty of back pressure.

Yes, definitely look into a tune as well. On the LPT (depending on who you go with) the tune will double your boost potential. Stickers add lots of HP too, so don’t forget to adorn your car with plenty of them. I have tunes on the same cars I mentioned above and would never go back to stock!

Here’s a recent photo of the Sunday grandpa with a hat on car (Dan, as my 5-year old calls it). This is the 3-piece, 3” Mototec DP. Notice the catted section is removable via V-ban connections. Also this DP has 2 O2 bungs for added monitoring. Notice you will need to use a defouler to spoof the downstream O2 sensor as well.

Hmm. How ridiculous is it to bolt the R pipe on to my DP? Will it make a difference sound wise? The pipe I'm looking at does not include the R DP. I don't really use Ben's terb much but I am about to add some hp stickers for sure. ;)

Not ridiculous at all, in fact that’s what I did until I had all my DP’s. The stock V70R DP is essentially the same as your LPT DP, so don’t bother with it. Lop off the resonator while you have it on the ground. I assume you have a welder, or access to one? The original pipe is not magnetic, so it is either aluminized or SS. However, you can MIG weld standard exhaust tubing right to it so no need to bust out the TIG.
