XC90 Ambient Air Temp Sensors

Post by Rscalera »

I had a LOT of trouble figuring this out, with little info out there, so I decided to post. 2004 XC90 T6 gave me a check engine light and P0074 code, ambient air temp sensor. Sensors are located on the bottom of the side view mirrors. The driver’s side p/n 8650033 appears to read the temp for the ecu to use. Passenger side p/n 8650034 appears to go to your dashboard reading and the climate control. Not that hard to replace; take the door panel/corner speaker off (flat screwdriver to pop off door handle, 2 torx 25 bolts, pop door panel clips out), unplug the green mirror electrical connector. One 13mm bolt holds the mirror on. Once the mirror is off, pop off the temp sensor panel, notice it’s got 2 white wires. Easiest to cut them out near the green connector, and unwrap the sticky fabric tape on the wires. I also cut the old wires close to the sensor, so I could tape the ends of the new wires to the old ones and pull them through the mirror assembly. Then splice as you see fit. Now that I’ve done it once, I can do it start to finish in about 20 minutes now. If you get a the P0074 code, but the temp on your dash is accurate, the problem is most likely the driver’s side. Hope this helps.

Were you having any problems with the engine along with the code?

Yes, I had some stalling and P2190 and P0497 codes. I just went ahead and replaced the air filter, purge valve, and boost control valve too. So far, the engine is running like new. Almost at 160k.
