Need opinion on air leaking from wheel rim

Hello all and Happy New Year, I think.
One of my tires is leaking air and I wanted to get your opinion on correcting this.
Just had my mechanic take a look and he told me that the inside of the aluminum wheel is rusted and the air is leaking along the rim.
He said there are two things I can do.

1) Remove the tire, wire brush the inside and then paint it. or....
2) Go to Pep Boys and buy a can of stop leak when the tire gets low again.

I think I know the right thing to do but is it worth the trouble?

My opinion: It is a pay me now or pay me later thing. Fix it well by removing the tire and smoothing the rim or put the easy goop in the tire and have a mess to clean next time the tire is removed.
Or just keep adding air to keep inflated.

I wonder if that stop leak will affect the valve itself or will it really go at the bead where it leaks ?
The easiest thing to do it to remove the tire - replace the valve at same time - and look how bad is corroded. The shop may spread more of their 'black' stuff at the bead, that may or may not help.

Just break the bead, no need to remove the tire to clean the rim.
Expel all the air, place wheel under the other wheel and lower the jack , the weight of the car will break the bead.
You can also use a pry bar to break the bead, use sandpaper to clean the inner lip and some bead sealer if you want.
I'm having the same problem but its too cold now to tackle it. lots of ways to do it.

I did what "volvolugnut" suggested and took it around the corner to my local Euro mechanic. He dismounted the tire, wirebrushed the inside and put a small bead of some stuff along the rim edge before remounting. $33 later all is well.
