MVS 20th anniversary??

Post by FireFox31 »

So, what are we doing to celebrate the MVS 20th anniversary? Can we throw a party for Matthew, the moderators, the great contributors, and all the loyal users?

20 years really is a reason to celebrate when you consider all the other forums which have been bought out by major companies. Through it all, Matthew is still hosting our helpful content, aggregating the best highlights, and being an all around cool guy. So what are we going to do about it?

Virtual Volvo meet via Zoom? Might be chaotic. Post a memory of the best time MVS helped you out of a jam? Goof on Matthew by posting ancient screenshots of the forum (see attached from 2008)?

There's the seed of an idea. Run with it.

Is Baskin Robbins as good as they use to be? Maybe 15 years now since I had some.

Or we could just post links to old snapshots of MVS from Archive.org.

MVS in May 2008. Yup, I remember this era.

MVS in Aug 2005. Phew, a little before my time.

How about the oldest snapshots on archive.org, October 2002:
The homepage, full of tips just like today.
The forums. With so few models back then, we only needed forums for "current, old, and really old".

Have you seen this? https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat-archives/

That's before the forum was powered by a database. Those posts were (are) HTML pages. Every time someone made a post, it generated an actual page. Notice how fast they load? No database calls or php processing on the server side, no Javascript processing and multi-file downloading on your end. The server sends one very small and simple page to your browser.

That's the upside. The downside is that today, running that would be a fiasco, considering there are no accounts in that system. Back then, there was little Web spam. Email spam yes... Web spam was unheard of. Anyone or anything could post as often as they/it liked, no login, no registration.

Yet I don't recall ever having to delete a post. Them were the days.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!
