2003 XC70 Angle Gear Delete

Post by surfin_phil »

Hi Guys
Have a bad angle gear and need to use the car for a while before I get my other one.
I've seen posts about completely removing the angle gear and prop shaft in earlier models.
I have nylon washers and a shaft collar to install to make sure the collar stays in place.
Does anyone know if there is an issue doing it on the 2003? Will it throw codes etc?

Thanks
Phil.

It won't throw any codes. Its pretty easy to remove the Angle gear but you'll also have to remove the propshaft which is a little tricky but doable. Any chance you might want to fix the AWD? I've provided a link to my angle gear welding project where I welded the collar sleeve to the angle gear output shaft for an indestructible primary drive if you want to explore that option.
If you do remove the parts just leave the collar sleeve in place and put a couple hose clamps on the CV shaft so that the collar doesn't come out. BTW...... the collar is usually a b@#$h to get off and will not go anywhere on its own. Mine is an '03 XC 70, these cars are no fun to drive with FWD only, consider taking the time instead to fix it if its a good car that you enjoy!

Thanks
It's just temporary until I get back to our other house in Oregon where I have another complete angle gear.
I think this one has a bad bearing.
Definitely will get it back to AWD.

Do I need to remove the Haldex fuse?

Nope.

I guess you can but consider that probably a third (more?) of these AWD cars have a shot angle gear or collar and are running FWD and the Haldex fuses are in. You might get a SAS code or one of the other AWD-related codes.
