Rear cam sensor seal 1996 850

Post by Danb573 »

Hey guys! Daniel here. I need some expertise on my oil leakage for my 1996 VOLVO 850 2.5l 5cyl non-turbo gas engine. I live in Rural-America, so my choice and availability for my parts are strictly limited to autozone or rockauto.com. My camshaft position sensor has been leaking for 3+ weeks now and it’s becoming more of a oil filler than a daily driver. I’m needing help finding the specific seals that I can use for position sensor, as I have had to return 2 seals already because they were not the direct fit. I’m worried of buying the wrong seal over and over until my engine no longer runs. This is a ‘96 850 GLT 2.5L 5 Cylinder gas engine, 4dr sedan. Any and all comments will be valued and considered. Thank you

Rural-America presumably still has a postal service, right? Go to FCP or iPD, order the correct parts for delivery, and be done with it.

Dan, you want to use either OEM or Corteco seals on these cars.

I use the Volvo web store website to specify OEM part numbers, then buy them from FCP , Tasha, or volvo parts lisle in that order.

If we source the right part number I probably have a spare I can pop in US Mail

Here’s how I found it...volvo is $20, Corteco $4

Do you need to remove the distributor?

OP said its the seal under the camshaft position sensor (exhaust cam, rear end) so nope, you don't need to remove the distributor (intake cam, rear end).

Just asking because they are usually done as a pair. Technically they are both rear seals.

Absolutely, intake and exhaust cams both have rear seals, that's a key point not just a technical one.

For the rear seal on the intake cam you do need to remove the distributor cap, the rotor and the mounting plate for the rotor.
For the rear seal on the exhaust cam you remove the CPS and a similar metal plate mounted to the end of the camshaft.

Be sure to put the plates back on in the correct orientation, it is possible to put them on wrong.
