Starter problem

Post by tango_1000 »

The C70 2007 didn't want to start. Battery is well, there were not noises coming from starter. The hot red cable is hot. I tried to see if there was power to the solenoid cable to the starter when give ignition and there was no power there. but I did touch the battery and a cable connected to the solenoid screw in the starter and it make a noise, I'm thinking that there is no power going to that cable. I did move around the relays but everything the same. My question, is it there something else between relay and starter...a fuse??? I'm thinking of changing the starter but if there is no power a new starter will not work either. Any help please. Thanks

Have you checked the condition of the battery cables? Remove them and look for corrosion at the terminal and in the cable end. Then check the power at the cable as it arrives at the fuse box under the hood. You should have 13+ volts under the hood at power terminal. The power cable can corrode internally in wet climates.

Thanks to everyone. I did take the fuses in engine out and check at the cables. The cable that goes from the relay to the battery have continuity, but no power. I follow the cable all the way to the computer and again I can see there is continuity, but the power do not get back to the relay. More ideas???

Remove the battery cable clamps and check for any corrosion. Clean with a wire brush and reassemble with a tight connection. Often the problem is a loose or corroded connection at the battery.

Last update.I still the problem, the car do not want to start, but, there is new symptoms. I did replace the starter, and the ignition switch. All the cables seem to be ok. There was a problem with the 30 amp. fuse, the pink one, next to the relay or near, the number 13.
Yesterday I was able to start the car with no problem, went for a ride about 50 miles, when I got there I turned the engine off. 10 minutes later I started the engine with no problem, there were grinding noises coming from the starter. So 50 miles later again, back near home I stopped at a store, and 10 minutes later try to start the engine and didn't want to. The fuse was blown. I waited replaced the fuse, and blown again, 3 times. So I call the tow truck. The next morning I replaced the fuse, the starter turned with a big grinding noise, the engine started but immediately i saw the fuse blown.
I replaced the starter, which didn't have any noises thinking that could be the problem, I replaced the starter with a NAPA starter, took it back, exchange, put it back and there were no noises, but after 2 or 3 times I starter the noises started and the fuse did blow.
The best thing I could do would be to replace the starter with an genuine Volvo, if this is the problem.
Also I turn the crankshaft with out the starter installed, manually, and it turn with out difficulty
Any comments please.

Remove the starter and inspect the teeth of the flywheel while turning over by hand. Remove spark plugs to make turning easy. The flywheel teeth may be damaged and cause drag on the starter. Assure the starter is not wedged crooked at the attachment point.

Thank you volvolugnut. I will do that later today. Is it the fuse blown cause by the drag on the starter?

Sounds to me also a problem with the flywheel rather than the starter. If the starter is blocked and can't move, then I suppose the fuse could blow to protect everything from overheating.
