Remove engine without trans ...?

Post by Sveedy »

Can I go this route instead of pulling the engine / trans as a unit ? I'm asking because I want to pull the engine using my chain hoist which rides on a dolly on an " I " beam up in the ceiling of my shop. But using that setup I can only move the engine side to side, not front to back like with a crane. But I've pulled engines before with it and all I needed to do was push / pull the car front to back as needed. Now I have a couple of wheeled dollies that I was going to put under the front of the car so I could remove the wheels and axle and still move the car back and forth. But if I leave the trans in, couldn't I just roll the car without the need of the dollies ?

If your car has an AT, the engine can be removed separately from gearbox. It's possible too in case of MT, but I don't recommend VERY much...

I've found some more threads on doing this, but I get the feeling that reinstalling might be harder than removing.
So I'll just pull them together. Read about dropping the engine down on the sub-frame and raising the car, and that almost seems to be easier. At least there are fewer steps involved. But I'll stick with up and out.

Just remove drive shafts, radiator fan and battery mount. You will have enough space to remove the engine in assembly. Wheeled dollies will be useful too.
