My wifes 240 DL needed a new water pump. All was going well until I dropped a nut down into the lower timing belt plastic cover.
I got the top cover off (had to take that off to get the water pump out...) but now I have to get the nut out of the timing belt area (lower plastic cover). Is there a way to get the cover off without taking the harmonic balancer off, and if not how would I go about getting the balancer off. My neighbor knows all about Chevy's as he's got a 68 Camaro chillin in his garage, but he wants me to see if I can figure it all out before he comes over and helps. This volvo isn't a chevy, but I'm not complaining, I was having fun until I dropped a nut into this nightmare of a problem. I couldn't get a magnet down to the bottom of the compartment.
If this post makes any sense at all I'd appreciate the help. I'll get some pictures if need be.
300,000 miles and runing strong I might add.
Thanks,
Lee

I tried something similar, I just couldn't get it down in there.
I think I am going to be able to get that pulley off next time I get out to work on it. Apparently there are 4 10mm or so bolts holding the pulley on? I already took the large bolt out of the center with an impact wrench.
Hopefully I've figured out my problem, but we'll see soon.
Thanks.

you didn't say what year. the early ones had 4 bolts and shims to adjust belt the later ones have a slotted harmonic balancer and there is a special tool to hold it.

the title of this thread is 89 240DL...
Problem solved, take out the large center bolt (impact wrench) and then take the belts off and it slides right off (with a little pushing/tons of pulling). Just remember when you put it back on to align the slot with the tooth on the shaft coming out of the engine.
