turbo seems too hot..

Post by MDK »

Hey all.. I guess this is a for the community at large or one of the moderators.. I don't know. anyway MDK here.. you know.. my vehicle seems like it puts out a lot of heat.. fan cycles as it should, new water pump, new beck/ arnely anti freeze, fresh oil, good trans fluid, good power, new catalytic converter... So with all that.. is it possible that the oil cooler lines going to the turbo are blocked or partially blocked? never had a Volvo that runs hot like this.. I've got a new thermostat assy on its way.. any comments toward this issue is appreciated..

hard to say with no description of symptoms.
How do you know its running hot?
The gauge is buffered, what temp does VIDA show.

gauge is buffered.. yeah.. it's not accurate at all. I'm some what limited in diagnostic abilities. I've got the heat shield off .. I suppose if I buy one of those new infrared thermometers I've seen ( but there not for cars just for covid) and if I knew what optimal temperature should be at full hot .. I might have a better understanding. The temp. gauge always stays dead center no matter how hard I run it, you definitely feel the heat coming out from the firewall in the driver's seat. it's a 2004 v70R... and my 2004 S60R.. doesn't have this issue... I have vida/ dice.. just didn't come with an owners manual.. and Volvo wants a 165$ an hour ( no thank you).. I'll just hobble along. I did pull a turbo from a 2006 S60R I found in the junkyard.. mileage unknown.. shaft play .. minimal. There is a 9 blade impeller from Mamba on eBay motors.. options.. options MDK

Heat in the pass side might not be the turbo.

if the turbo is glowing red, steam coming from under the hood its too hot. Ive installed a digital gauge that reads the actual coolant temp from the computer, it moves up and down dependant on engine speed/load etc. volvo thinks most drivers dont want to see these fluctuations so they installed a smiley face gauge. Sounds like you have a heater vent stuck ducting hot air when you want cold, i doubt very much you could feel the engine/turbo overheating from the cabin....

thanks for that DR.. another pair of eyes or perspective is always helpful.. I saw a gauge cluster package for sale in the classified section of this website.. this wagon that I have was one that some one gave up on. after a year of ownership, I've almost got every issue addressed..

well apparently, the sensor and the thermostat were weak, and the converter were plugged... runs way better and cooler... I flushed it 2ce with beck/Arnley..

If you can't use VIDA/DICE, Torque app ($5) on an Android phone with an Amazon Bluetooth OBD2 dongle ($12) that plugs into the OBD2 On-Board Diagnostic port under the dash shows the temp, reads engine codes and resets them.

https://www.amazon.com/Mestart-OBDII-OB ... B01HXGX8V6

I log some engine parameters and can review a map of my drives with logged values, in addition to displaying values in real time as dials or on a main menu listing.

The map display shows my route and engine coolant temp (eg), in color from green (27C) to red (92C) as a line on the route. Shows speed, MAF and many others too,

My temps are usually 95C or so, rising to 110C in heavy stop and go traffic after hard driving. Well, when I had my old commute, that's what I saw. Now on an easier commute with a burst of highway, the S60 does not get above 92C. I had a new thermostat and electric temperature sensor put in within the last year or so.

(Due to pressurization and antifreeze, coolant is not boiling at 110C.)

Note, these are measuring engine coolant temp and not turbo temp. There is no sensor for that. Also many remote hand held sensors may not measure temps much higher than 100 C
