Timing belt replacement no start

Post by wool »

2004 xc70 I was in the process of replacing the timing belt but got stuck when I was unable to remove the crank pulley. I had the car towed to a shop asking them to remove the pulley and replace the belt. Got a call this afternoon saying they were unable to rotate the crank. I had set all the timing marks and locked the cams. When I went to the shop I talked to the mechanic and suggested that the resistance because he was on a compression stroke. He did get the engine to rotate 360 degrees. He put the belt on and tried to start the engine but it wouldn't fire. He didn't know the timing marks were on the cam cover till I Showed him. Fortunately the cam marks were lining up with cover but I have no idea how badly the crank mark is off. I was so fed up I left to wait and see if they figured out the problem. I'm concerned they destroyed the engine.

It is cranking over. That means there is no interference.
There is no difference between X & X+ 360° on the lower end.

The difference between the Compression and Combustion strokes is determined by what the head is doing. Valves open Intake and Exhaust strokes. Valves closed Compression and Combustion strokes.

Based on what you wrote: My best guess is that the VVT to Camshaft alignment was not done prior to installing the timing belt.
