Images show in reverse order

Post by FireFox31 »

Hello, multiple images attached to a post are shown in reverse order of their file names. This especially hurts people who are posting a walkthrough and their filenames are timestamped since it shows the pictures in reverse order of their text instructions.

This happens when the images are not inserted inline, simply displaying as attachments below the post. I think that years ago, attachments were in the correct order of their file names, so perhaps something changed.

Tangential question: When we insert the images inline, how do we stop them from also displaying as attachments below the post? With a little more effort, we could arrange them however we wanted in the post, but the duplication below is very distracting.

Thanks.

FF, you make a good point. I've flipped this after finding a setting

Attachment display order: Display attachments ordered by time.
Ascending
Descending

Which was on Descending. It's now on Ascending, which makes far more sense.

I tested it on viewtopic.php?f=1&t=98197 which had the wheels shot last first, and of course the whole set was reversed from what you see now.

I'm crossing my fingers this doesn't mess up any legacy posts' sets of attachments, but if it does, chances are the user edited the EXIF data of the attachments to make them conform to what was unnatural uploaded them to have them appear as s/he wanted. I'd characterize how it is now as "natural" ordering. I think the benefit of this new setting would outweigh anything like that edge scenario case.

Thanks for bringing this up.

This is a retroactive change going back to the Dawn of MVS Time.

Can anyone check if this has messed with inlined images, where you actually place photos in your text? I can't find a good example, but I'm really positively 99.99% certain this change will not affect those. There is no reason why it would.

Yes, all previous posts appear to have the attachment order flipped. Not good.

This is an example.
viewtopic.php?f=30&p=582449#p582449

My daily reports should have the states listed in alphabetical order. They now have the last half of states shown first.

I can fix all postings in the future, but do not want to change all from the past.

I see. Let me think about this.

Further examples of correct or incorrect photos are more than welcome.

I've looked at a dozen or two posts with inline images and those have not changed (and I don't want them to).

What attribute is the forum using to sort? File creation or modified, EXIF, alphabetical by file name?

When you posted it, did A appear before B? What are the creation and modified dates/times of the two files (ie: did you create B first)? Sounds like you did multiple posts with these attachments, so how do they look now vs. then and do their dates/times justify their order?

When I posted the last report this morning, A was on top of B. To do this, I inserted file B first because I knew from experience the last file must be inserted first. Every post made before today appears to have file B before file A. The creation time of the file makes no difference.
Now B is on top of A after Matthew made the change.

The order is the order in which you select files for uploading.

If you select multiple files in one discrete upload, it's however those appear in your Windows upload window. I'm on PC at the moment. I'll switch back to MacOS later and test there. I didn't know how this works because I exclusively place images inline to control where they appear, and to also to avoid the "ATTACHMENTS" text that appears above what we're talking about here...

Notes:

You can affect the order of a single multiple file upload by for instance changing how they're ordered in the Windows upload window... Date Modified, Name, Size, Type, etc.

Again, all this discussion applies to files you upload and do not click "Place Inline". Inline images are independent of this setting, entirely.

For those playing catch up with this topic, the set of images below is an example of what we're talking about... I did not place the images. Just uploaded them as a set and wrote this post. They appear below exactly as they appeared in the Windows upload window. Before today, they would have been reversed.
