06 V70R haldex service- fill and drain and fill?

Post by Turbolena »

The car has 192k on it and the haldex has never been serviced, so I will be replacing the pump and the filter and oil. I would like to drain it and fill it and then drain it. Does anyone know if it would be okay to do the rinsing fill with something other than the Volvo AOC Oil...like 75w 90 or? I will of course use the Volvo oil for the final fill. Thanks,

No its not ok. The Haldex fluid is very specific. If you buy 2 litres you can do 2 flushes plus one final fill. Be gentle on that flange nut though if you're going to do it that many times! You'll be pretty good at removing the propshaft after this exercise.

Agreed, the Haldex oil is specific. You could save $6 per liter and buy the Febi product from FCO Euro but I'd use the Volvo Haldex fluid at every stage. It'll be crystal clear when you're done and the new pump will be a happy camper.

I would also add that if you're doing it that many times, take the pump and filter off for each drain, a lot more fluid and gunk comes out when you do. Only on the final drain and refill, replace the pump and filter. Do not replace the pump with a non OEM (aftermarket) branded pump, only use Volvo.

Thanks for tips.
Could I turn the back wheels by hand to stir the oil around ? Or as Blacklab hinted will I need to completely reassemble the drive shaft and each time?

You could do that, it would probably stir things up adequately. Also turn the input shaft where the flange bolts on, good idea and a whole lot less work!

Try a low speed drill on the input shaft? Don't force anything. I did some kind of flush without putting it back together but I don't recall how.

Having 192k miles and being in MN I presume getting the driveshaft's CV joint out of the Haldex will be a struggle. There are 2 non threaded holes on back of the haldex. Try putting strong bolts in there and drive them with an air hammer if you have one.

As other members stated don't put any fluid in there but Haldex and don't risk it with an aftermarket pump.

EDIT: You need to remove the front CV joint first. The rear CV joint is deep within the Haldex.

VIDA instructions states to remove 100ml after the Haldex is filled. That is only if you are just siphoning and filling back up via the plug. Since you'll be removing the driveshaft you need to first fill with Haldex fluid until it drips out. Take her for a 20min ride with several good accelerations to get the Haldex engaged. Accelerating on a flat dry road is all it takes to get the Haldex to engage the rear differential. After the ride add in more Haldex fluid until it drips out. Now siphon out that 100ml of fluid.

Yes, there are complete instructions and tips available for servicing the Haldex including removing the drive shaft. For the two midwest cars I did it on, an air hammer was made super quick work of driveshaft removal after the the threaded holes got me nowhere.

Here's a couple really good threads, yes there are others:
