850 Transmission Lines question

Post by SonicAdventure »

Hi, I've had some slow seepage on the lower trans line radiator connection for some time now. Its evidenced by the presence of trans fluid moisture in the area of the lower connection just above the lower radiator coolant hose connection.

Looking at my lines, they both appear original to the car, and the car is 1996. Probably time to replace them both, I would assume. However before I go and buy both the lines, I was wondering what specific part usually is the cause for seepage in that lower radiator area? In short, I'm wondering if the hose might be good but something in that connection such as the metal tip or something in the inlet might be failing, or is the radiator failing and the hoses are fine? I was looking at FCPs list of parts and it looks like they sell both the upper and lower lines for the same price each. I would hate to replace the lines only to find it was a radiator failure.

Depending on the year, there can be one or 2 rubber 'O' rings on each pipe connection to the radiator cooler section.

These can shrink and leak with age. Also, the crimps themselves can start to leak with age.

Lastly, I had an issue with a rubber seal inside the radiator oil cooler fail and start to leak.

I'm sure you have already done this, but clean off all the oil and then run and see where the leak re-occurs. Check the pipes are still available, but then there have been several people post making up their own pipes using the old end pieces.

Good Luck!

Neil.
