With VIDA Shop Manual section and YouTube, I cannot find tutorials on my model.
Vida is different from what I have in the car, though I used my VIN for it's profile.
On YouTube, I see lots of the same, 2005 Volvo XC90, V8, the engine layout is not like mine.
I need to get to the thermostat and the coolant temperature sensor. I am able to easily pop out the
lower cover, covering the dipstick and the oil fill area. Looks like that's a cover that can be easily screwed
out behind the intake cam. Though VIDA remove and installation instructions are sometimes vague,
at least, I wish it matches my engine go have a good starting a project idea.
Please, where can I find info on my engine layout (model)? At least, a good searchable PDF will do me good.
Please don't get me wrong, I can navigate to almost all in my layout, but sure some may be specific, like, do I
need to open the main top to get to the thermostat? Sure it would be at the passenger's side of the engine,
lime the rest of the Volvos.
Thanks

In my VIDA2014D, I am showing this V8 engine (the B8444S) was used on the 2005 XC90 in all markets. Could you confirm that you have the same V8 engine (with acc. belt driven water pump); maybe I can look for procedures and parts diagrams here. Hope I can help.

B8444S is the motor, XC90 or S80 fitment.
See attached for location of thermostat and CTS. Thermostat is easy to get to, the Volvo part (30720083) will include gasket so don't order one separately. CTS/IAT (30646713) is harder to reach, you'll probably need to remove manifolds and maybe even the fuel rail to get to it.

Cool beans!
Thanks ggleavitt.
To Oka:
The T-Stat has two screws to undo: one from top and one from under the car.
If you still need the procedures how to remove and replace, let us know; I can post the pdf from VIDA2014D.
Cheers!

Yeah, about that t-stat. You'll immediately note a down-tilt to the t-state housing once you get there. Given the position and holding everything in place while attaching, I've found it pretty easy for the outer wrapped t-stat gasket to move around in the housing channel and not allow the cover to fully seat. However you do it, just look for a thin concentric gap around the t-stat cover before you tighten everything down.
If you're serious about replacing the temp sensor, consider doing with a valve cover reseal if it's anywhere close to due.

Did you replace your CTS? If yes, did you have to go through all that?

Thanks a bunch for the information. The Volvo thermostat I got came with a gasket. I also got a CTS.regent wrote: ↑28 Dec 2021, 08:13 In my VIDA2014D, I am showing this V8 engine (the B8444S) was used on the 2005 XC90 in all markets. And yes, peeking from the side, that's my engine, all the belt turn points match.
Some automobile education please. Googling, some hits shows:
1. CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor) the same as IAT, and some hits identifies them as diffefrent items.
2. IAT being Intake Air Temperature. What's the difference(s)? Where is the IAT?
3. What would be the difference between the IAT and the sensor in the MAF?
4. Does this engine only has one belt? No timing belt?
5. The alternator is way back and down there. How on earth can that be replaced if need be?
Thanks you all for your help.
Cheers

Thanks for all the caution in replacing the CTS.ggleavitt wrote: ↑28 Dec 2021, 15:52 Yeah, about that t-stat. You'll immediately note a down-tilt to the t-state housing once you get there. About the resealing. That would be lots of work, right, for this engine? You mentioned it since I would have to remove the manifold and others to replace the CTS? I just got this XC90 last month. Did you reseal yours? If you did, any instruction just to see what's entailed, like a PDF.
Googled for a 2005 XC90, FCPEuro shows one gasket "Set" and a gasket "Kit" (multiple gaskets)

Okay,
Firstly, about Googling…
Discalimer: I have never done any of that and I have no clue who or what Google might be… Sorry.
Here is some info in attached PDFs from VIDA2014D – the procedures to replace the Alternator, CTS, CP, T-stat and Valve Cover Gasket (VCG resealing), and Parts Diagrams for T-stat, Coolant Pump and IAT; some torque specs, etc. Hope this helps.
Replacing the Alt looks like a long story that involves removal of the belt, the RH Drive Shaft and re-calibration of the suspension, so I added those procedures in. I believe the Swedish Elves built your car around the Alt.
Some of the steps require disconnecting and re-connecting the main battery – you’ve got that one procedure also - for just in case.
The V8 valve trains usually go with timing chains - so yes yours only has an accessory belt. Good thing is timing chains seldom fail unless the balancing shaft bearing gives in and the chain jumps time and then it takes a lot more out (ouch…). I sincerely hope you don’t have to face that much fun (or the opposite thereof).
Sorry I have never worked on an XC90V8 so less than zero experience here. Good news is there is more than plenty of videos out there.
Happy New Year!
Stay safe.
