So I just purchased a 98 Volvo S-70 turbo five cylinder and I'm overwhelmed with where to begin a tuneup for the car. What can i do my self and what do i have a mechanic do ?
It only has 89,200 miles on it and it had a recent oil change. The coolant is dirty so i know that it needs a flush and a cleaning.
The engine is in immaculate condition and well taken care of but I know it's gonna be needing a tuneup because it's a 24-year-old car
The engine runs great no misfiring and no problems so far
Lastly I was wondering if it was possible to make the car accelerate faster? If so what do I do to the car to do that?
Any tips and advice or comments would be appreciated it!

Just Stage 0 first and drive for a bit. Never know what major thing may go and you'll have buyers remorse so just the basics. I'm sure I've missed a couple of things.
0) Check PCV - Glove Test!
1) Check timing belt and water pump replacement schedule
2) Coolant flush, thermostat and replace all coolant hose large and small
3) Complete transmission flush
4) Bleed all brakes and flush entire system
5) Plugs (OE Copper Is Best), Cap and Rotor
6) Check brakes for safety
7) Consider current oil as flush oil. Replace with either as year round oil in SF.

I would not recommend wholesale replacing all of the coolant hoses, especially if you are not replacing with high quality (e.g. Volvo branded) hoses. These are parts you can evaluate by looking at them. Replace the ones that are swollen, have become rock hard or badly cracking. Probably none of them. Almost certainly the heater hoses are still fine, I wouldn't touch those they are well documented to go 20+ years and most replacements are junk.
I would entirely replace (2) on that otherwise good list from MoVolvos with: Inspect and replace most rubber vacuum lines. These tend to dry up and crack with time and with small air leaks performance takes a hit.
It sounds like this car may have been well maintained in addition to lightly used? Could help limit what needs to be done.
Ignition is a good idea (plugs, cap rotor) as suggested. The best performing, longest lasting plugs are the Volvo factory plugs they are platinum not copper. You can get them much cheaper using the Bosch FR7DPP+ which is part number 0242235749, as cheap as 5 bucks each if you shop around e.g. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 30751806kt (yes this is the right plug for your 98, even though the fitment doesn't say so at that link. FCP sells the same set for more $$ from this other link https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... -fr7dpp5kt. 2a) Check hoses replace as needed. Double check hose(s) behind cylinder head timing belt side
3) Complete transmission flush
4) Bleed all brakes and flush entire system

5a) Recalled some people had issues with Platinum. I opted to replace Copper at shorter intervals. Depending on mileage driven FCP Warranty every 2 years?

8.) Recommend Chevron or Costco Premium only. Lived in the Bay Area for 35 years from San Jose to Vallejo to Livermore including Colma, Daly City and 3 places in San Francisco. No cheap gas please
9) If PCV requires service definitely go over all vacuum hoses and PTC cleaning.
10) Replace oil cap gasket
11) Clean the PTC but be careful of the brittle vacuum hoses. I intentionally avoided those unless the PCV needs replacing. They may require customizing to improve the existing hoses/lines setup
