transmission issues

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

transmission issues

Post by xtech210 »

so my 02 s80 2.9 non turbo finally threw a CEL over the slipping tranny.

one was regarding a stuck solenoid, the other was about reduced power in sport mode.

ive known its been dying for a while and am planning on just replacing it, im not sure about a few things:

can i use a turbo transmission in a non-turbo car? do i need to get one from 2002 specifically?

is it cheaper (there are some for under 700 on ebay...) to just get it rebuilt locally (san antonio texas)?

I have an 03 S80 T6 currently at 144K. When I purchased it over 3 years ago I put in a Transgo Shift Kit and did a complete flush with filter change. The shifts improved and were crisp and responsive. Fast forward today it can only be driven in manual mode and even then carefully or will slip enough to get codes at which time it goes into limp mode.

Since it was driven by my Son I did not get to leak in time so I believe the Torque Convertor, clutch and gears are all damaged. Lot of small bits of metal in the pan when I recently did a flush and filter change. After doing some research I wouldn't go for a low mileage used transmission. The cheapest rebuild locally is $1700 to $2300 with a one year warranty.

A local Volvo specialist told me to drive it till it dies and junk it as it was not worth putting in a transmission in terms of value of the car. As for your question I believe the NA and Turbo have the same transmission according to FCP Euro website when you input the vehicle in both NA and Turbo.

I would give it a complete flush, filter change and Transgo kit before thinking about transmission replacement. Drop the pan and if there are no silvery bits of metal and just slurry you might be able to drive it a few years longer. Keep that fluid full and clean is key. TRUST ME   !

Got codes in every gear even driving in manual mode. If there is a slight grade in the road I have to nurse it or go to lower gear and higher revs or not enough pressure and starts slipping. If you don't have an OBDII use the free Car Scanner software and a mini OBDII dongle from Amazon. The free Torque Light software has minimal functions.

Due to the Car Scanner software ease of use I am able to safely clear the Limp Mode on the fly, taking a screen shot before doing so.

There are many to Wifi or Blue Tooth dongles to choose from. I've lost two and recently purchased 3 and never had any issues with any.

so i did some more research and troubleshooting. the fluid was super low. topped it off, shifts way better than it did but still needs a flush/fill/filter job before i get any more involved work done on it.

That's great news! When you drop the pan and it's only some slurry rather than bits of silver debris you probably didn't do any damage. Do consider the TransGo Shift kit to prolong the longevity of the trans. Lastly, double check the level as these trans are very sensitive and the dipstick difficult to read.
