s40 crank no start

Post by ldenorio »

hello good people of volvo land
my 04.5 s40 2.4i (285k) is a crank no start, checked the fuel pressure at rail with gauge and getting 43lbs of pressure when cranking, how do i check if i'm getting spark?
not sure if alarm is causing this but i have no codes, i disconnected the battery for an hour and reconnected still crank no start,
i didnt have any other issue before hand so i dont think its the cam or crank sensor since i dont believe they just die, i was told they usually give you some type of code or notice before hand, like stuttering or stalling.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
best regards
Larry

Check the tension on the timing belt. I bought my 2003 S40 with a cranks but no start condition. The Tensioner retainer broke and let the timing belt slip just enough to case a no start condition but no damage. Got me a $3500 car for $500 and a timing belt kit. Because nobody else would touch it. :D

43 psi sounds low for a P2 fuel pressure. I think Spec is 55 psi. Two things fail on P2 fuel delivery , the fuel pump and the pump electronics module or PEM

Try a shot of ether to see if it’s shy on fuel or spark

Second generation S40 are P1.

Fuel line pressure Desired value

thanks for all replies, it ended up that there was no spark, upon further inspection it was a loose ground on the coil wires.
