2012 S60 T5, engine teardown expecting head gasket

Post by rdezsofi »

2012 S60, T5, about 129,000 miles. Brief History: Purchased a year ago off a questionable car lot.....for the teenage stepdaughter. CEL within a day after purchase, replaced the catalytic converter with aftermarket. (Probably why it was sold?) 3 months ago, the teenager got lazy and quit checking the oil. Well, it had 1.5 quarts left in it. (!!!!) Shortly after it started the mysterious coolant leak, no leak could be found. 12 ounces a week. Last week she went to start it, and the dreaded white cloud out the exhaust. Computer says misfire cylinder 2.

Okay, pulled the head. The head looks brand new, as it's super clean as if a machine shop just got done with it.
Issues:
No O-rings around the spark plug holes....just RTV.
None of the head bolts were even close to what I would consider tight. (Reused bolts I wonder?)
One of the two dowel pins under the head is missing.

Yes, it's clear someone had the head off and used a generic head gasket. Probably reused the bolts. Wasn't torqued properly, and definitely not all were torqued the same. Surprised the spark plug wells weren't full of oil.

The head is straight and like mentioned...looks like recently serviced. No cracks between the cylinders. Head gasket, no obvious leak. BUT. A strange vertical line in cylinder 3. The line stops where the top ring would end its' upward travel. Almost looks like a crack, but I've never seen such a perfect straight line in a crack. My thoughts are it had a foreign object in that cylinder at one time....maybe hence the head being rebuilt? A broken piston ring? You can feel it slightly by lightly dragging the back of a fingernail across it.
Check the photo.....thoughts and opinions?

Personally have never seen a crack in a cylinder from the bottom up. If it is a crack, it doesn't appear to have gone through to the water jacket. (I can see down on the other side of the cylinder wall...but not all the way down.)

I'm inclined to reinstall the head with a proper head gasket and dowels.....figured I'll pressure check the cooling system before I add coolant. If that is a crack, well the block would be toasted and the teenager will be waiting even longer :-)

I agree. Cracks are not perfectly straight and stop at the top of the ring travel. That was foreign object damage.
