Is the timing correct based on these photos.
This one is head on, and not at an angle, and is slightly out of line.
On the crankshaft, it is from an angle, so the point is more to the left.
Does the timing look good, or is it off by one groove?

Here's the best photo I've found with the crankshaft pulley timing marks aligned correctly. From your photos both the crank timing pulley marks and the cam timing marks are rotated CW too far. Rotate the crank two times again and align the crank timing belt pulley marks correctly and then see how the cam sprocket timing marks align to the cover. How about the other cam?

Looks like the crank needs to be rolled back half a cog. Before you redo the timing, try to get the crank positioned exactly right, then check the cams. It looks to me like you might have timing right, you’ve just got the whole mass rolled clockwise a bit too far.
This is on a 2.4T, correct?

Do not turn the crankshaft CounterClockWise - the belt tensioner will not work and the belt may jump. Instead, rotate ClockWise.

On engines with VVT I always go 90* past timing marks, then roll backward to align with my marks. Edit: this is, of course, after rolling the engine over by hand 4-5 revs (clockwise). This is also for correct tensioner setting. I can find it in ViDA if need be. No, the belt won’t skip if you have tension appropriately on the tensioner.
Here is a screenshot of how your timing marks (punch marks on face of cam sprockets) should appear. The crank, as shown by firstvolvov70, is also how your want yours to appear.
Small helpful video with VVT timing content.

I aligned the markings better. I am trying to get the crank vs cam in time relative to each other as I am reassembling the engine. The timing is the same as in the last photo, and the belt has not been removed between those photos and these ones.
Both cams are properly aligned. And here is the crankshaft. Is the timing good, or would I have to take the belt off and do it over?

Since the protrusion is still between the notches, but not in the center (at least from the viewing angle), what would lead you to believe that it is one notch off? If it was one notch off, wouldn't the protrusion be between different notches on the gear? Did you just mean that everything was one notch off relative to the timing marks?

Are you sure?
One notch on the crank would have to be the same amount on the cams because the belt would make the notches move the same amount. The reason the crank makes 2 revolutions when the cam makes one is because the cam has twice as many notches.
