Axles replacement

So my daughters 2008 s40 the passenger side axle broke at the joint. So I decided to replace both sides of the axles. Now the drivers side won't go all the way in the transmission. I have attached a photo. If I take out the clip it will go all the way in. I got oem axles. I have pounded it and it won't go on any farther. Should I have put the drivers side in first or does it really matter which side goes in first? Please helps
I have taken it out about 5 times tried to rotate the axle to see if it would go in.
