Totally OK to remove it with the car on the ground. You don't want to mess with it with the car in the air. The spring will decompress and shoot the strut downward. With the car on the ground the weight of the car compresses the spring, top is held by the fender bottom is held by the strut plate, it...

Maybe slap on a decent quality boot (GKN) and repack the grease and you can actually get some life from the axle? Presumably the boot split only recently.

Reman axles are such a scourge, thanks for reporting.

Dropped the engine and trans back in yesterday, now today I'll get everything back together and hopefully have it running by the end of the day. Maybe I'll also get to putting the new speakers in my 940 and reflashing the ECU on my dad's X3... lots to do!
