DC Clamp meters are very safe as, you just clamp them around the wire that you're measuring current on. You could definitely put it on the alternator output wire and see how much it's drawing. Worst thing that could happen would be you would pop the meter's fuse if it went above the rated current of...

Today's photos: Bed and Breakfasts in Scotland. We stayed at these. If you have not visited a Bed and Breakfast, they are most often a pleasant experience In the US or Scotland. Often they are a chance to meet new people with very different lives.

I think the main part is rock, but the black blade is metal. That is all I know.
