I have built about 40 feet of wood shelving out of 8 foot 2 x 4s and plywood shelves. These are 2 foot deep, 8 foot tall and 8 foot long. Shelves have supports around outer edges and across centers of 2x4s. Bolted frame using 1/4 inch bolts. They are strong enough for most anything but engine blocks...

On a front wheel drive car, the differential is built into the transmission. So, if you want an easier life, I would look at trying to find a matching transmission with the same ratios as yours. I don't think there are many "repair" parts available for the M56 transmissions, at least that's what I've seen mentioned.
