The manifold heats up and expands/ contracts much more than the engine block.
This means it has to slide a bit on the gasket in between them
So, the metal part of the gasket touches the exhaust manifold, the paper side to the block!
Voila!

Could be. The fuel pump on the 1999- is much more reliable than the -1998, but monitoringfuel pressure at the rail will tell you if there is a delivery problem. No vacuum controlled fuel pressure regulation on ME7 or DENSO cars , 1999-

Both nicely done. Add an engineering inspection protocol to those repairs. Your nose will tell you if you have a seep, but 10 seconds under with a flashlight looking for staining will catch it earlier. I would say once a season, every three months.
