That’s the canister shut off valve with the broken hose. It might be broken on the air side which won’t affect much. The rectangular black box is the carbon canister
Your fuel tank issue is caused by a bad head gasket, though.

Re: 97 850 dash/headlights flickering only at startup. UPDATED
Battery is less than a year old, and battery cables and terminals are mostly free of corrosion. Get the squeaky clean and shiny. The corrosion can be under the insulation where you can’t see it. An IR gun or voltage drop test might tell you where there are problems. Check the big B+ feed ca...

Re: S70 Engine
I’ve got a decent short block up here. High miles but from a good runner
For a 1999 turbo you will need a pn engine with exhaust VVT to work with your ECU

Re: Replacement Key
Of course after the key was already cut and while at the key place, I spied the "missing" key on the roof of the car tucked behind the driver side center roof rack support, just where a family member had left it. It had remained there for 30+ miles of highway driving. A review of key poli...

We play on the table with a unique set of family rules involving a 14 year single malt, We never google words in our house, and Siri often calls Abby for word definitions I’ll...

Re: Testing/Experimenting with Fuel Pump Relays
On the bench testing, have you tried cold soaking it in the freezer for an hour?
By saying” cold soaking it on the electrical bench” you can charge $200/ hour for using engineer-speak
“ put i n freezer” is a mere $15/hour phrase

Re: S70 Engine
Do you run light (5000 miles per year) or heavy (20,000 per year)? It isqalmlst is almost always cost effective to repair a light running car vs buying a new set of problems. My gut feel is valve burning seem pretty rare and uncorrelated. Evans factors above definitely will put things in your favour...

Re: Shocking saffety test for the XC90
That is from 2 years ago. This is from the Detroit Free Press in 2015. "The nine models with zero deaths were: Audi A4. Honda Odyssey. Kia Sorento. Lexus RX 350. Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. Subaru Legacy. Toyota Highlander. Toyota Sequoia. Volvo XC90. Volvo - the safest car in the world (September...
