IT was the door lock actuator...Went onto YouTube and found two excellent installation videos. Aside from my stumbles and brain fog...job went well. Thanks for your input.

Hey, just to close this out - I did find a good used angle gear off of an XC90. By the looks of it (signs of sealant at the seam of the halves), it had been rebuilt already. Took her out on her first road trip since getting everything buttoned up. 50 miles of secondary roads where I could start the break in process. Ran flawlessly. Never a CEL or anything to even indicate that all the work had been done. Can't open it up yet of course, but I can tell that it's all there...
