It should. Where you get in trouble is when the converter comes apart internally, when that happens the back pressure is pretty huge. So long as it doesn't sound like it is full of gravel it should work fine.

It occurred to me that I might still have the coolant temp sensor I had replaced over a year ago and I was able to find it. Popped it in and the car started right up.

P80 -1998 developing coil failure 1275174
I’ve been reworking a 1998 NA and ready for its return home to VT. Last few days, I noticed a slight stumble at idle every 5 minutes or so, maybe a 100-200 rpm drop Today, a badmisfire above 2000 rpm. Luckily, it does it in the driveway without a load.
