Re: Thoughts on the longevity of the S70?
I think longevity is the wrong word. I learned working with Land Rovers and Land Cruisers that longevity is a subjective concept. Everyone perceives that Toyotas are unbelievably reliable and that Land Rovers are not, especially the ones with the old Rover v8. Well it's a hell of a lot easier to tak...

Safe Boost Limits By Engine Chart
Hello friends! I was pondering what the safe turbo boost limits for each model were and it lead me to doing a little bit of math on everyone's behalf so that you can have an actual reference chart to go by. I have calculated the Effective Compression Ratio (ECR) of the three available P80 Volvo Engi...

Re: '97 850 - repair or scrap?
So I'll replicate what some others have said. This is a Do It Yourself group here at MVS. I'll be honest if I had to pay someone to work on my Volvo I'd buy new cars it would be cheaper. hahaha. Volvo 850/S/V70's are also one of the easiest cars to work on that i've ever owned. Hardly ever any...

Re: Decipering OBDII readers: questions
8 years ago, I used the ELM327with Torque app on a cross country trip in my 850 base. It was fine for what I needed, accurate speed, MPG, a couple of other things. Now, I'm looking at the ELM327 again and found this recent post by esl-97-850-T5 on what appears to be the latest fully featured 850 up...

Check out this blast from the past I just found
Picked up a bunch of parts from a really great Volvo tech on Friday. In the lot of parts was an Alpine 6 disc cd changer. Reminds me of my dad's old 3-series and my mom's old discovery. Figure I'll install it in the trunk to keep it period correct. Now to only find six CDs to play.

Hello fellow Volvo enthusiasts! If you drive an 850, odds are at some point your glove box latch is going to fail. If you have anything in there it is locked in there permanently and protected from anyone (including yourself) who may want to remove the contents of your glove box. This has happened t...

Re: Help needed with Volvo 850 engine popping noise
Look at how the engine vibrates when it makes the noise. Is that knocking/misfire? Burned valve? It doesn't sound like piston slap. Could be a weird sounding rod knock. The serpentine belt is long and it takes several rotations of the engine for it to hit the same point in the belt. Does the noise g...
