Seems to have been fixed by using better quality contact cleaner for the instrument cluster harness connector, one that removes oxidation and not just contaminants. Hopefully this helps someone.

Release bearing has likely jammed. You need to get under the car and can you remove the rubber gaiter from the selector fork and have a look inside?
