clutch pedal stays down

Post by Clemens »

After an AT failure 2 years ago I M56 swapped my 96R with a pro mechanic friend's help last year. I used every part new and possibly OE. Everything worked fine till today my clutch pedal suddenly got stuck in the low position and won't return. This leads to a weird situation where the transmission is out of gear. I can move the shifter, but the gears don't engage. I would imagine that a shot clutch cylinder would not allow me to disengage the clutch, but not to engage the clutch. shouldn't the clutch self engage if the hydraulic fails?

Also: I bought eveything from Skandix. The slave cylinder is OE quality, the master is noname (didn't have Volvo or OE). I'd guess it is the master, but what would I use in the future if the one I have lasted less thanna year?

btw., there are no fluid leaks visible and the brake fluid reservoir is full.

Is there any travel evident at the slave cylinder? That is, is the actual clutch disengaged?

The clutch disengaged and got stuck. i can pull the pedal back out. if I press on the pedal, it goes down and stays there.
the weird thing is that the the clutch stays disengaged. with the motor running I can shift through the gears without getting any motion.
if the hydraulic fails I'd imagine it should engage. unless the throw out bearing or fork get stuck.

Try bleeding the system first. Perhaps a clog has caused the fork to remain depressed.

Release bearing has likely jammed. You need to get under the car and can you remove the rubber gaiter from the selector fork and have a look inside? You may be able to get a long screwdriver in there and persuade it back.

Otherwise as the guys have suggested one of the 2 hydraulic units has a failed seal not allowing the pressure to be released. I would suggest in that case it is the master cylinder.

I released fluid pressure at the slave and that didn't help. But tapping the slave with a hammer got it to release and the clutch did engage. Since the pedal still won't return but the clutch is in closed position I highly suspect the slave cylinder to be kaputt.
This is kinda good news because the throwout bearing would be way worse to replace.
