Here's the difference between the early casting on the left, and the 2003 forward casting on the right. The flange is held on by a 24mm nut and is about 1/3 inch shorter on the 2003 onward models.

On my '03 a replacement DIM needed to be cloned so I had my original rebuilt at XeMoDeX. You can drive it without the DIM but all sorts of things will not work, door locks, power windows, cruise, etc. Do disconnect your battery when removing it also.
