Passenger side wiper arm question

Though I don't get to use them much, I have always noticed that my passenger side wiper arm seem to stick up unusually high in my line of site above the front hood line. Annoyingly so. In fact it makes a little bit of contact with the under side edge of the hood when it is in its down position. I no...

I hope some of the experts will chime in on this. I'm just delighted to hear that pistons can be removed without pulling the engine, as I think I might need to do rings on Sveedy this summer. I wasn't looking forward to the project, but not having to yank the motor is a relief. Sorry I don't have an...

Well I would be pulling the head as well once I get it out. Looking at doing this so I can rebuild it. Engine removal questions

I'm not ready to do it yet, but I have a couple of basic questions for when the time comes: Is it easier to remove the engine w/out the transmission, or is it easier to remove the whole engine/trans as a unit and then separate ? I really like the height that she sits at now - just a touch higher in the rear when on level ground. But that might be due to a tired front suspension. Thinking about it further, I will just go with the Koni's on all four. Now when it comes to doing springs, what do you recommend ? I'm worried that any lowering springs would be a stiffer ride, but I guess that might be the trade off for better handling.

Well researching shocks for Sveedy, I find that the general consensus is that once the originals are worn out your magic carpet ride is gone for good. When you put the manifold on it will push the hose further down and make that much worse, if not close it off. That's the purpose of the spring.

Seems like this comes up often and there are a few ways to go. Your just trying to get as much nonrestrictive flow as possible with something that will stand up to hot oil. I believe you need to, or should, use oil resistant hose for the PCV system. I used 1/4" oil resistant hose for that. Make sure that you get that hose on tight before you install the manifold. I didn't and it popped off. No way to get to that clamp without removing the manifold. Again.

Once upon a time I used a tow truck to lift out the engine on my MGB. I think it cost all of $ 20 to have it lifted out and set down on the ground on an old tire. Might be worth a call, or better yet stop in to a towing shop and ask in person.

Re: Fuel pump same between NA & Turbo 850/S70

You could check one of the Volvo parts suppliers first for a listing for the NA pump, and then for the turbo pump and see if they list the same part number. When I did mine I had to enlarge the opening in the plastic carrier basket, or what ever it's called. The new pump has a larger diameter than s...

I read this post earlier and payed attention to my RPM's today. What your describing doesn't seem to happen too me. RPM's stay somewhat steady after I let off the gas. Then they slowly start dropping. I'm driving a turbo as well. I'm no expert but some will chime in.

Welcome to the madness ! :)

Typically, what your describing is a sign of valve seals going bad. Oil seeps down the valve stems when the car sits and collects in the piston cylinders. When you fire it up the oil burns off.
Not the end of the world.

Gauge is generic no name. I checked the o-ring and oiled it a little before test. Pressure builds fast in the first 2 or 3 cranks, then doesn't do much of anything for the remaining 5.

Thanks for all the input - I at least feel that I can wait a bit on rebuilding. For now.....

Those numbers are with the engine cold so I imagine it's a little higher warmed up. I'm leaning toward trying the seafoam treatment first in hopes that it might help before thinking about taking on the head gasket job.

Compression test results :

#1 90lbs
#2 90lbs
#3 130lbs

#5 130lbs

Does this look like a head gasket issue, and maybe why I keep failing on the glove test ?

Water pump is usually good to at least 200k, better to leave the old factory one in there than put in a crappy aftermarket one.
So would we be better off changing the w.p. every other belt change, or once the original is gone, every belt change ? Just wondering for the next time I have to do it.

I don't think you have any worries. If it was sold as a " kit " then I would think the tensioner was included. And 8k over 4 years is all good.
However normally the water pump is replaced along with the belt, but I think that's just because it's right there.

Well based on my experiences registering cars in D.C., Maryland, California, and now Arizona, I can't see a problem. What transmission you have shouldn't matter at all. Re: Pressostat o-ring

Thanks Neil I bought a AC low pressure switch from FCP because I thought that was what I had. Volvo part. No problem there except that when I received it, the pipe size was off. Apparently I have a pressostat, not a low pressure switch. When I took off the switch, which I didn't do before I ordered ...

Pressostat o-ring

I discovered that my AC low pressure switch ( pressostat # 9171700 ) was bad and I ordered a new one, without realizing that there is an o-ring under it. I have searched and found the master list but I didn't see it listed as that. Are they listed/sold by size ? Looks like I'm going to be without AC...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

I decided to replace my engine coolant temp sensor and found out it can be a pain to remove. As my father used to say - " Give a lazy man a hard job, and he'll figure out an easy way to do it . " So one cheap sacrificial socket and a couple of minutes with a grinder.... His point was made. :) 008.jp...

Re: Fluids disposal questions Topic is solved

Call me old fashion but I don't believe that any of that sort of stuff should be dumped down drains or tossed in the trash. Wait for or find a hazardous disposal drop off. Granted I live off well water and have my own septic system as well, so I feel very connected to what goes into the ground and w...

Re: Power steering bypass

I haven't done it either, but it should be about the same procedure as bypassing a heater core. Basically your just connecting the out flow port to the in flow port. Anyway that you can achieve that will work. Connect the two hoses together with a union of some sort, or maybe disconnect both at the ...

Wow ! Just $ 25 more a year here. But things have been going up. It used to cost $ 34 per year for registration, but now is up to $ 53.
This for older vehicles; in this case my '94 Cherokee and of course Sveedy.

Far from an expert, but I'd be looking at the PCV system first.

Re: Volvo Posters

So I heard back regarding shipping from Holland. Apx $ 34.00 which covers up to apx 4lbs. inc. shipping tube. I'm not sure what a poster weighs, but I'd guess that a couple of dozen or so posters could be shipped for that amount. I will wait till beginning of next week before ordering. If you want a...

Volvo Posters

So I reached out to Volvodrive Magazine regarding their posters ( 90 years of Volvo cars etc ) and they will ship to the US, even though this country isn't listed on their ordering page. I am waiting to hear back on what shipping will cost. My thought is that if enough people are interested, then ma...

I don't think your being anything but reasonable. Frankly that one might be worse than the first. Maybe it's the pic, but it almost looks like something corrosive got on it. I'd say third time better be a charm.
