Solved: I pulled the pan, then tried to hand turn the engine with the oil pump installed. I had apparently bent the bracket that is supposed to keep the PCV drain from hitting the lobe of the crankshaft. The bracket was now hitting the bottom of the connecting rod right next to the bolt that holds ...

Update: I checked the timing and everything is lined up. Looking at the cam and valve setup I don't see where pulling the valve cover is going to tell me much or how a valve would collide only when rotating clockwise.

Three good starts in a row and no codes; the problem seems to be fixed. I pulled the starter and replaced it. I dont have a readily available method to test the amperage under load (the old starter passed fwiw at O'Reilly).

Thanks for the reply...given there hasn't been anything else done that should be causing interference I plan to pull and have the starter tested.

If that all tests ok I'll consider separating out the crank position sensor wire from the rest of the harness and re route it.
