I had quite similar behaviour. Check the boost pressure sensor, it's located behind the rh fog light and is accessible if you pop the plastic trim.
Still a PITA to change, but it works without taking the front off. Sensor isn't very expensive so i'd just buy it and see if it changes anything.

My M66 AWD stays with me! :) Okay, i've read something, that the drivers seat might be more complex.
