Here are much better pictures. It seems whatever goes in front of airbox is missing and it looks like it might be big as a coffee can. ABS unit? And between the engine and airbox is a space for emissions/fuel control.

Thanks guys, for the great input. I think getting a key and seeing if it will run and is worth the effort is a good idea. Being 120 miles from the dealer complicates the key replacement. Also I agree that I need to get you better pics. The electronics definitely intimidates me and any major repairs ...
