Something is missing from the engine

Post by Jernelson »

I tracked down the owner of an abandoned v70, and in short, he gave it to me. Someone began stripping it, and piecing the puzzle back together I noticed two cut green wires and three hoses (vacuum lines?), and a couple places to bolt something down. The void is where a throttle body would go, between the engine and airbox, drivers side, but it’s turbo so I don’t think I need one of those. Does anyone know what would go there? Oh, and there is no key, so that’s another thing.

The turbo boost control valve goes there. Three hoses and two wires. A cheap part and one you can find at a junkyard..

That key will require bringing the car to the Volvo dealer , though, a $500 event, there are no hacks.

If you decide to continue this project and need correct engine photos, post again. I have the same year and model (2001 V70 T5).

The throttle body is attached to the intake manifold. Follow the air pipe over the engine from the turbo to the air cooler, then from the drivers side across to the engine.

On the 2001's the Italian throttles often fail due to the throttle plate position sensor wearing out. Xemodex in Canada provides repairs.and replacements - including touchless sensors.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks guys, for the great input. I think getting a key and seeing if it will run and is worth the effort is a good idea. Being 120 miles from the dealer complicates the key replacement. Also I agree that I need to get you better pics. The electronics definitely intimidates me and any major repairs does too. It’s not as simple as a 1949 GM truck.

If you have the room, it might be better to use this as a parts car and find another running specimen.
You could spend $1000 only to find the valves were crashed.
Or spend $1000 for a runner that needs parts.

I’m having a senior moment. Has anyone bought real VIDA , purchased a day subscription, and married a key to a P2 at home?

They key itself is cheap, it has to be married to the car in software using a Volvo application with a live connection to the Volvo server.

These guys can do it remotely: viewtopic.php?t=80237 Chinese DiCE is OK. Also VDASH can do it as well, however it could be more pricey.

Also check if the BCM (brake/ABS module) is in place, I see its connector laying under the air filter box.

Also not sure about earlier P2, but you may miss a brake vacuum pump (deep under air filter box) and a 3-way valve (in front of the air filter).

Here are much better pictures. It seems whatever goes in front of airbox is missing and it looks like it might be big as a coffee can. ABS unit? And between the engine and airbox is a space for emissions/fuel control.
