The kilometers to empty is calculated and your average kilometers per liter is what its based on as well as liters of fuel in the tank. Therefore it would appear that your fuel economy has fallen off.

Yes electrical faults can start all of a sudden.

Sounds like an electrical part getting hot and failing. I would suspect ignition power stage, coil, crank position sensor, or cam position sensor. After cooling down it works ok and on short trips it's ok but after longer trips it heats up and fails.

I have a 04 S60R AWD. The awd can be turned off simply by activating the parking brake light by lifting parking brake 1 click, or connecting a switch across the parking brake switch to turn off the awd. If the parking brake light is on AWD is off.

Lets not forget the older volvos held up very well and there is a good reason why the new ones don't, maintenance.
Volvo relaxed maintenance schedules on newer volvos thus they don't last as long. If you want your newer volvo to last a long time follow the older maintenance schedules.
