Volvo Repair Database Remove rear driveshaft- 99 xc70

Post by commlend »

Hello Everyone,
This site in incredible. I am in process of removing rear driveshaft from my 99 xc70 to make it front wheel drive.(Driveshaft is bad and I am curious if I will feel any slight increase in power w/FWD) What size torx do you use to remove driveshaft? The closest size I have in my set is a T40 and it was stripping. Has anyone removed the driveshaft and made a generic plate/ cover to place over viscous coupling to prevent debris from going inside? Thanks...

Some people on the V70xc forum have removed their driveshafts. Check to make sure what the bolts take, I think they take an allen wrench rather than Torx. Here is a picture of the front coupling.

Thanks holler1,
I appreciate the response with the nice clear picture. My coupling was so dirty when I looked at them I assumed they were torx lol...

Allen wrench...

Thanks again.

Commlend, if you do remove it, please post back to this thread any observations/impressions you have. We don't have anything on this; I searched the far reaches of the site just now and turned up nothing.

Thanks in advance!

Just one other suggestion. In other posts I have read that it's important to mark the bolt locations if you plan to put the same driveshaft back on at some point. This is for balance.

I have a 04 S60R AWD. The awd can be turned off simply by activating the parking brake light by lifting parking brake 1 click, or connecting a switch across the parking brake switch to turn off the awd. If the parking brake light is on AWD is off.

hi guy,s ,sorry and girls , i'm new to this site so hope this (my first post) ends up in the right place !
i removed my prop/drive shaft (gearbox to rear diff) and had it completely re-built and balanced using GKN parts , prettymuch the same as land/rangerover with universal joints i can change myself (internal circlips) and a centre / hanger bearing i can remove. this set me back £360 from a prop/driveshaft company i worked for in the uk.
while it was being re-built i drove about 1500 miles just frontwheel drive and found loads and loads of torqu steer and about 25% loss of confidence cornering. i didn't notice any improvment in the mpg. (17 mpg town,22-24 motorway) what i did find was after towing a 23 ft caravan about 800 miles with oddsize tyres had killed what was left of my awd , and when i inspected the two driveshafts going into the rear diff , i had 2-3mm of play /orbital float ,where the shafts enter the diff and this was where the noise/rumble was being generated. iv'e since bought two rear outer cv/stub axles with abs rings from ebay for £30 each new, removed the rear driveshafts completely and just run with the stub shafts in. and boy what a difference , almost totall silence from the rear end! trully FWD.
i will re-fit and repair the awd system as and when funds allow . the improvment is worth it . for now it's up on axle stands having had new steering rack/stut top bearings(up/lower)drop links/sway bars /springs/wheelbearings/antiroll bar/brakediscs,pads .sorry about the spelling .lol!
hope this counts as a contribution!

ummm more AWD fun :)

1: FWD owns AWD in reliability from 98-02 (USA market)
2: The first image has a ripped boot :)
3: If you strip the bolt you are in for some fun, go a little oversized and hammer it in there with all you can!
4: You don't need a place for the VC
5: It if VERY VERY common to remove AWD! I HIGHLY recommend it unless you have the funds and know how to work on the system yourself. I am going on a stock pile of 3X drive shafts, 4x couplers, and 3x bevel gears JUST for if I buy another AWD :)
6: The 03+ systems do NOT apply to this system so the ebrake will not work. The 03+ have the electronic Haldex VC so you can run sets of 2 tires instead of a complete set of 4 tires. As in you don't have to worry about the 3/32 tread difference from front to back. 03+ systems OWN 98-02 systems :)
7: if you want a drive shaft I got a good used one for ya :)
